EV charging: collaboration is crucial for fast development

Electrical Vehicle charging services are another two sided market. Therefore they have similar business characteristics to payments, invoicing and e-identity. The basis for successful services is a sound value proposition for both drivers and charging providers which are both primary target groups for providers in this space.

Innopay has a vast experience in setting up and operating collaborative networks (‘schemes’) for service providers in two sided markets. For EV charging a lot can be learned from our experience in payments, e-invoicing and e-identity.

Key requirements

Key requirements are: 1) drivers want to charge anywhere 2) charging provider (eg in streets, garage, petrol stations, hotel, office, home) want to service every driver. In order to achieve an attractive service for both target groups, providers in this field have to cooperate, putting standardization to work and make charging a ‘seamless experience’ for both drivers and charging providers: ‘plug and drive’, payment comes via a subscription or direct payment on site.

Facilitate

Public authorities have to determine their role in infrastructure: do they want to invest themselves billions in the infrastructure for the public space or do they want to facilitate a market to be developed and have investments paid for by direct usage? In any scenario cooperation and competition between providers in the EV space is key since drivers want to be able to charge anywhere. The financial flows between different providers associated with these charging transactions need to be organized ‘out of sight’ for the user as well as the ‘hygiene factors’ such as safety, high quality and market competition.
